I would first off like to thank the Meridian Public School Foundation for their support over the years. It has almost been six years since I graduated in 2007. The path leading to where I am today, all started back at Meridian High School. Whether it was Mr. Shick pushing us to understand AP Calculus, Mr. Protzeller pushing us to better our writing capabilities, or Mr. Lawrence pushing us to comprehend world issues. All through high school I kept hearing that the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields would be growing and producing jobs in the near future. I have always had an aptitude for the construction industry, so why not go after a good job doing something I enjoyed. Somewhere between high school and community college, I decided to head for the engineering field. After I graduated I went to Whatcom Community College to receive my Associate of Arts and Sciences degree. I focused my studies in math and sciences which would help when I transferred to a 4-year college. While I was at Washington State University I started receiving financial help from the McClellan Trust Fund through the MPSF. From the time I started at Washington State to the time I graduated, tuition jumped over 30%. A lot of students are working to pay for these increased costs of college, which makes it very difficult to put adequate time into the courses. The McClellan Trust fund allowed me to approach the rigorous coursework without having to work during the school year. I was not only able to excel in my coursework, but become part of campus life. I was able to spend time at sporting events, enjoy intramurals, and attend engineering clubs. During my time in Pullman we were exposed to many Professional Engineers, Marketing Reps, and peer interns in the Industry, one of which lead to my current position as a Project Engineer here in Bellingham. I would like to thank the Meridian staff, the MPSF board members, and Mr. McClellan for supporting my journey.

Ever the creative thinking entrepreneur, MPSF president Paul Kratzig has announced a deal recently struck to raise funds for Foundation scholarships that will allow Meridian grads and community members to own a piece of history.
In early February, a crew of volunteers will begin to dismantle and prepare for sale pieces of Meridian High’s ‘Old Gym’. Items will include portions of the gym floor, baskets and backboards, scoreboards, the beautiful clear grain fir seats from the east side of the gym, lockers from the shower room and a variety of other small items. The gym floor will be cut and finished in twelve inch squares and sold to former players from basketball and volleyball teams. Material from benches will be used to frame portions of the floor, which will make a beautiful border in contrast to the floor.
As Paul aptly described, “This is a way the old jocks can own a piece of history. I know one player who wants the bench he warmed for three years on the basketball team in the late fifties.”
Naturally, all proceeds from sale of memorabilia will put put directly to use in providing awards and scholarships for the ongoing education of graduates of Meridian High School. Please contact Paul Kratzig at 360- 319-1727 with any inquiries regarding the project.

Picked as 2012 Washington History Teacher of the Year

LAUREL – The Meridian High School seniors sitting in a circle in Steve Lawrence’s class are talking to each other about what they believe when it comes to God and the afterlife.

The 51-year-old Lawrence has been named the 2012 Washington History Teacher of the Year and the discussion – fed by questions from Lawrence – shows the approach that has earned him the honor.

A student who is Sikh talks, as does one who’s a Mormon. Also adding to the discussion is a student who’s a non-believer and a few who believe deeply in God and Jesus. Some speak haltingly as they search for words, others eloquently on what can be a charged topic.

The point of having such discussions, Lawrence tells this advanced placement government class, is to show the students that they can talk through controversial matters civilly.

Or, as he said to them, “to try to get you not to be like what we see out in society,” before using the nation’s Founding Fathers as an example of those who worked through tough differences.

“They disagreed on so much stuff,” he told the students, but they talked it out and they compromised.

For Lawrence, it’s important that his students see the big picture, learn outside their textbooks, find the connections between past and present and their place in it all.

“Why does that matter to anything in my life?” he said of what he keeps in the forefront of his approach to reaching his students. “Students say that a lot: ‘Why is this important?’ ”

His Washington History Teacher of the Year award is from the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Lawrence also is in the running for National History Teacher of the Year.

“It’s a nice honor. I’m appreciative,” said Lawrence, who has been teaching at Meridian High School since 1994.

He teaches U.S. history and government, AP U.S. government, current issues, law and society, and comparative religion.

Lawrence also coaches Meridian’s mock trial and girls’ golf teams as well as serving as the adviser for the Teen Court club.

“He deserves the recognition,” said Meridian High School Principal James Everett, who nominated Lawrence for the award.

“It’s no surprise for us. We’ve known for a while that he’s outstanding,” Everett added. “It’s very clear when you talk to students or you see him engaging (with students), he is more than their teacher. He is an advocate for those students.”

The state award is co-sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, The History Channel, and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. This year’s award honors middle and high school teachers.

Lawrence said his interest has primarily been in government and politics, and history’s impact on politics. He also looks at history through music.

“I like to look at history from a different angle than what a textbook does,” he said.

Lawrence will be able to delve into his love of music this summer as one of 80 teachers nationwide to be selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar. He will take part in a workshop that focuses on the music, history and culture of the Mississippi Delta.

As a teacher, Lawrence has helped students collect oral histories of alumni, created a local history website, created a mock trial on Harry Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb, developed town hall meetings on the American Revolution and the Civil War, and created a mock Constitutional Convention.

He also has developed curriculum on 20th century U.S. cultural history, with a focus on music, art, film and sports.

As for how he makes history matter to students, Lawrence starts by saying that “energy and excitement is contagious.”

“If you demonstrate an excitement about how history matters and the importance of being involved in what’s going on in our country, that will be contagious. Kids will pick up on that energy.

“Another part is, I involve the kids a lot. They participate in trying to make change,” he said. “We, this year, participated in a Capitol Classroom where students worked with a lobbyist in Olympia to try to help legislation, so they were directly involved in the process. Anything like that helps.”

1916-2012
“Home again,
Home again . . .”
Mary Alice Pratt Rowe, born December 4, 1916 in Burley, Cassia County, Idaho to Sarah Etta Bailey and Leonidas Moroni Pratt passed away on April 15, 2012 in St. Louis, Missouri where she had been living for the past two years with her daughter, Deanne and her husband Bob. Previous to that she had lived for fourteen years with her children in Utah. She was 95 years old and, in her own words, “it has been a good life.” She was the second oldest of eight children. She attended elementary schools in Canada and Bellingham, Washington and graduated from Meridian High School in 1935.

(more after the jump)

She obtained her teachers certification at Albion State Normal School in Idaho in 1938, and later in life graduated from Western Washington State College, and also attended Brigham Young University. While teaching elementary school in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho she met Delos Allen Rowe and they married on July 22, 1941, in the Logan Utah LDS Temple. After living in Oakland, California for two years they moved to Bellingham, Washing- ton, where they raised their family, raised turkeys and chickens, and served faithfully in the Bellingham Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She returned to teaching again after the death of their youngest child, Lorette. She taught elementary and middle school in Pocatello and Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, and in Bellingham, Wash- ington. She loved teach- ing, counseling, teaching art, coaching the then noted Meridian Drill Team, and being a librarian in Meridian School District for many years. She cared for her students individually. After retiring from teach- ing in 1976 she spent the next twenty years caring for and traveling with Delos, doing artwork, genealogy, temple work, and sharing his love for horses and golf. She had a passion for doing and teaching genealogy and with Delos traveled the country doing research. They served together for many years in the Mesa Arizona, Seattle Washing- ton, and London England LDS Temples. Her child- ren and grandchildren were her daily joy follow- ing Delos’s passing in 1991.
She is preceded in death by her husband Delos, her daughter Lorette, one granddaughter Trenna, and two great grand- daughters Autumn, and Amberlyn, as well as three brothers, Marvin, Joe, and Chuck Pratt, and two sisters Audrey Jones and Mildred Sandvik Poulsen. She will be greatly missed by her children and their spouses: Bruce and Sandra Tomila Rowe, Boise, Idaho; Mark and Paula Taylor Rowe, Orem, Utah, currently in New Zealand serving an LDS mission; Deanne and Bob Johnson, St. Louis, Missouri; and Glenn and Melody Carr Rowe, South Jordan, Utah; 34 grandchildren; 81 great grandchildren; and her brother Wally Pratt and sister Jean Poulsen. We are sure that her advice to those of us she has left behind would be, “family is everything” “I guess you’ll just have to pray a lot” and “carry on, carry on, carry on!”
What a glorious reunion she is surely having with Dad (Dos) and Lorette, and all those other Rau’s, Bailey’s, and Pratt’s she grew to know and love so personally through her genealogical research and who surely love her for keeping their stories alive in the hearts of their descendants. With her memory now clearly restored, imagine what stories she is telling all of them about her adven- tures here with us in this life. We have so much missed being able to tap into those wonderful memories here during these past many years, but will never forget hearing all the poems and piano tunes that seemed to stay in her memory: “Home again, home again, dancing a jig” “The lady in Red” “I’m a nobody, are you a nobody too?” “And here we have Idaho” “What did Ida hoe my boys” “March Militaire” and all the LDS Hymns! We miss you mom, but promise we will keep the stories, songs, and poems alive from generation to generation. We will not break the link of faith.
A special thanks to Paula, Deanne and Bob, Melody, and Sandy for their patient and loving attentiveness to mom during the last fifteen years and to St. Antho- ny’s Hospice in St. Louis, especially Krissy and Lisa. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 20th, at 1:00 p.m. in the Ferndale Second Ward, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5800 Northwest Drive, Ferndale, WA. under the direction of Safe Harbor Funeral Services. A time of visitation will be held at the church for friends and family from 12:00pm to 12:45pm prior to the service. Graveside serv- ices will be held at Greenacres Memorial Park following the church service. Dona- tions may be made to the Perpetual Education Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (http://pef.lds.org) Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to

The superintendent of the 300-student Hood Canal School District will be the new superintendent for Meridian schools beginning in July.

The Meridian School Board on Tuesday, March 27, unanimously selected Tom Churchill to replace Tim Yeomans, who is leaving the top job at Meridian to be superintendent of Puyallup schools.

“Tom Churchill has more experience and more credentials to effectively run the school district,” school board chairman Brian Evans said.

“He understands rural school districts like Meridian. I think he’s going to extend the good work done at Meridian,” Evans added.

Churchill beat out David Forsythe for the superintendent post. Forsythe is executive director of teaching and learning for Meridian School District and former principal for Ten Mile Creek Elementary School in the district.

“I feel honored to be selected. I look forward to building relationships with the people in Meridian. We’re in a people business so it’s all about relationships,” said Churchill, who also is principal in the Hood Canal School District.

He said he looked forward to being part of Meridian’s leadership team – comprised of core administrators, principals, assistant principals and department leaders in the school district – and working with the school board.

Churchill, 49, praised the work that Yeomans has done.

“Tim will be a hard act to follow,” he said, adding that Yeomans “is a pretty dynamic guy” and that there were many good things in place in Meridian because of his leadership.

Meridian School District has about 2,100 students, and Yeomans has been its superintendent since July 2007.

As for his plans for Meridian, Churchill said that will be guided by a transition plan being put together by Yeomans and the school board.

“They’re in the middle of some pretty major construction projects, so that will obviously be a high priority,” Churchill said. “I need to get to know the leadership team and the work that’s being done there and to get up to speed. My highest priority will be building relationships with folks in Meridian.”

Churchill also has previous experience as a superintendent when he served in that capacity in the Entiat School District from 2002 to 2004.

Although he’s coming from a smaller school district – with a $4.6 million budget compared to Meridian’s $17.5 million – Churchill said he will be able to hit the ground running because the responsibilities of state reporting and budgeting are the same for all school districts in Washington state.

“We all have the same responsibilities to the state and federal government and local taxpayers no matter the size of your school district,” he said.

Churchill also was a finalist for superintendent of the nearly 2,000-student Mount Baker School District, but the Mount Baker school board last week picked Charlie Burleigh, principal of Kendall Elementary School, to be the new superintendent.

Churchill said he was interested in coming to Whatcom County as a step up in his career and also because he had two grown sons in Bellingham.

“We spent a lot of time, my wife Patty and I, in Bellingham visiting our sons,” he said, adding that one son has moved to L.A. to try to make it as an actor.

The Puyallup School District board hired Yeomans for the Puyallup superintendent job on March 6. That district has about 21,100 students.
